What's it like to be a Landscape Architect?
A Landscape Architect designs outdoor spaces and environments. Their work usually involves planning, designing and managing land areas such as parks, gardens and urban spaces, while considering aesthetic appeal, functionality and environmental sustainability. This profession also requires collaboration with other professionals, like urban planners and civil engineers. Most Landscape Architects work within architectural and engineering services, with some in government sectors or self-employed. Their duties and responsibilities often run from preliminary assessment of potential sites to post-construction evaluation, and everything in between.
Tasks and duties
- Generating landscape designs using computer-aided design software (CAD).
- Presenting concept and design ideas to clients or project stakeholders.
- Collaborating with engineers, surveyors and architects to ensure the feasibility of the intended landscape.
- Creating comprehensive plans that include elements such as plant selection, irrigation, lighting and architecture.
- Overseeing the construction of the landscape to ensure it aligns with the original design.
- Carrying out environmental impact assessments and creating solutions to minimise harm.
- Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of environmental legislation and local land laws.
