Since the Quality Migrant Admission Scheme was implemented in Hong Kong in June 2006, most of the applications received were from mainland China.

According to the Commission on Strategic Development, the Immigration Department received a total of 587 applications in 2006 for the Quality Migrant Admission Scheme. Eighty percent (472 applications) were from mainland China and the rest (115 applications) were from other places. Among the first batch of 83 qualified applicants, 73 applied under the general points test, and the others under the achievement-based test.

It is reported that about 28,000 talents from all over the world have applied to work in Hong Kong through various means over the past year, with an increase of 10% compared with 2005. For example, the number of mainland China students graduating in Hong Kong who applied to work in Hong Kong has increase by 72%, from 236 in 2005 to 405 in 2006.

The Commission on Strategic Development will discuss and review the Quality Migrant Admission Scheme as well as other schemes, and may consider increasing the quota of applications and relaxing the age restrictions.
