Any questions? Making presentation in English 英語簡報技巧,教你小秘訣

Does the thought of speaking in public make you break out in a sweat? Relax! Giving a presentation in English is not as hard as it seems, especially if you know some of the secrets of successful presenters. Keep reading to find out more!

  1. The first step in a great presentation is planning: To do this you have to know your audience (the people you are talking to) and your purpose (your reason for speaking).
  2. Body language (non-verbal communication) is just as important as what you actually say. Pay attention to your posture, clothing, grooming, actions, eye contact, gestures and facial expressions, and don't forget to smile!
  3. Your presentation should always start with an introduction (opening) and end with a conclusion (closing). This will help you make an impact at the start and leave the audience with a good overall impression.
  4. An outline is a summary of what you plan to talk about. This helps the audience follow your speech.
  5. Signals and signposts are words and phrases that give direction and structure to the presentation, for example Moving on to the second point... or Next, we will look at...
  6. Visual aids are devices you can use to present information visually, and can help make your presentation more interesting and memorable. There are many different types of visual aids, like overhead projectors, whiteboards, maps, photographs, films, handouts, flipcharts and product samples.
  7. Visual aids are only effective if you use them well: make sure they don't distract your audience (or you!), and remember to check that all your equipment works before you start your presentation. If you use handouts, distribute them at the end of your speech, or the audience will be reading them while they should be listening to you!
  8. Delivery is the way that you present your information. A good delivery is natural, lively, credible, interesting and honest.
  9. There are many different styles of presentation delivery, for example impromptu (unprepared) or memorized (learning the whole speech by heart). It is probably better to use a combination of these, for example using notes to remind you of the basic structure of your talk, rather than memorizing every word.
  10. The biggest problem most presenters have is nervousness. You can deal with this by being familiar with your topic and by practicing the speech until you are comfortable. For more great presentation tips and techniques, try Englishtown's online Business English courses!
