All about Marketing and Communications

Product and brand marketing has been gaining importance in various industries. But what do practitioners in marketing and communications do? JobsDB organized a seminar on marketing and communications in early December 2009 to let job seekers know more about the work and the career developments of marketing and corporate communications.

Grace Au, Director, MediaMix Limited; Benjamin Chiu, Assistant Director, Marketing ¡V e-Commerce and Sales Channel, Prudential Assurance; and Karen Chu, Senior Manager, Corporate Communications, Asia-Pacific, Cisco Systems, shared with job seekers the importance of marketing in a corporation, no matter it is in the promotion of products or services, or in brand building.

New Communication Tools
All speakers told the audience that marketing and communications work, whether it is MarCom, public relations, or service marketing, is challenging yet demanding. They reminded the audience that the world of media is changing every day and practitioners have to be aware of the new tools for communication. On web 2.0, a lot of new social media tools have emerged and are gaining importance. Web marketing tools can be best used especially for young customers. Job seekers should therefore be sensitive to the market changes and customer needs.

Other personal qualities required for marketing and communications practitioners include:

  • Creativity
  • Ability to communicate
  • Language proficiency
  • Analytical power
  • Outgoing personality
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Willingness to learn
