As layoffs are forcing more people to enter the job market, the key to getting hired no longer fits so snugly in candidates' hands. Instead, employers are in control and they have the luxury to pick and choose from an increasingly larger labor pool. This shift in power has left many job seekers wondering what they need to do to gain employment. Perhaps if candidates are aware of what employers want, they can then better prepare themselves for the job-seeking process.
As hiring managers are seeing more applicants on a daily basis, they want to know as quickly as possible what an individual has to offer. Therefore if a candidate wants to get noticed, his best bet is to stay focused and be straightforward. Instead of writing a long cover letter, simply state what job he is applying for, what are his expertise and what he has to contribute.
Once a candidate is invited for an interview, he will soon find out that the rules have changed. Most interviews are no longer a one-meeting process. Instead, companies weed out their unwanted choices by putting potential candidates through a more rigorous and thorough interview process. Until the job market swings back in the candidate's favour; applicants must learn how to better prepare themselves for interviews and we suggest the following:
- Interview yourself. Create a project where you are being asked to interview your replacement at work. Write 5 to 10 questions that you feel are critical to the success of that job. Make sure that your answers are brief and to the point.
- Know your resume. Interviewers often ask questions based on what it says on your resume therefore ensure you have specific answers ready with details.
- Be positive, smile, and most importantly, listen attentively. Employers usually hire someone who shows enthusiasm for their company and for the opportunity being discussed.
- Do your homework and find out as much as possible about the company before you attend the interview. Think about the potential questions which you may have to answer and make a list of questions to ask your interviewer to show your interest in working for that company.
- Besides asking questions, candidates should also project a positive attitude. Whilst it is important to hire someone with the right skill sets and experience, most employers would also look for an individual who is comfortable to work with.
It would be wise for an applicant to find out how they can set themselves apart from the competition. In general, employers are looking for candidates:
- Who have updated their resumes from job titles to every task which they have accomplished.
- Who have updated their skill sets.
- Who have considered contract or temporary employment during times of downsizing or layoffs to keep their skills and connections up to date with the market.
- Who are flexible.
- Who project a positive and can-do attitude.
Hope the above will be helpful for your next interview!
