A cornerstone of the West Kowloon Cultural District, M+ is Hong Kong’s new museum for visual culture, encompassing twentieth and twenty-first century art, design and architecture, and moving image from Hong Kong, China, Asia, and beyond.
Since 2012, M+ has been presenting diverse public programmes and exhibitions, and is amassing a permanent collection, in the run-up to the scheduled 2019 public opening of the museum building designed by Herzog & de Meuron with TFP Farrells and Ove Arup & Partners HK.
The M+ Pavilion, the first permanent building to be completed in WKCD, will serve as the venue for the exhibitions organised by M+ in the run up to the completion of the main M+ building in 2019.

This position will play an integral role in the lead up to the opening of the museum to ensure all museum building services such as cleaning, mechanical and electrical, environmental, maintenance programmes, landscaping, waste and utilities are ready for operational mode, and once open these services are overseen and managed to ensure an efficiently, effectively and safely run building. The building should be prepared to be capable of delivering the critical environmental conditions required by the M+ Collection and its associated loan programmes, and that these conditions are continually achieved. The position will also provide support to the museum-wide artistic and special events programmes to facilitate works required and ensuring activities are compliant and safe, while further supporting the delivery of an excellent visitor experience.
The M+ Pavilion, the current 300sqm exhibition space for M+, is included within the scope of this position.
For both the M+ Pavilion and the future M+ building, you will be responsible for:
- acting as the key senior point of contact for the M+ management team for all Museum Building Services functions, reporting on all related areas to ensure management is briefed and that decisions can be made at the most appropriate timing;
- understanding M+’s specialist building services’ needs, communicating these requirements and ensuring they are delivered to a world-class museum standard;
- working closely with the District Operations Department and other relevant department to ensure that all Service Level Agreements contain sufficient details to support the level of environmental conditions and that they are achieved through their related teams and contractors;
- actively overseeing the delivery of facility management and technical services relating to mechanical, electrical and other associated systems and that strong planned and preventative maintenance programmes are in place. Overseeing the soft services provided including cleaning, landscaping and waste management;
- monitoring and managing all additional facility management requirements above baseline support, and dealing with any facility management vendors directly where necessary;
- taking an active lead in all Health and Safety requirements from an M+ perspective, ensuring at all times that staff are working within a safe environment to the highest levels;
- planning and developing a structure for the future Museum Building Services team and recruiting the relevant staff required;
- ensuring the team receives the necessary training so that their knowledge and skills are of the appropriate level in time for the opening of the museum;
- establishing and overseeing environmental monitoring and utilities management of the building to ensure cost effective and efficient usage. Leading on the compliance of these areas from a museum perspective;
- ensuring Environmental BEAM commitments are met with a particular emphasis on ensuring utilities usage is properly managed and delivered cost effectively;
- managing all minor building works programmes for M+;
- co-ordinating all Museum Building Services planned and unplanned activities minimizing the impact on the artistic and commercial programmes and avoiding any risks of damage to the collection and loan works;
- managing any related budgets;
- acting as the key interface with the relevant internal and external parties to support the witnessing and commissioning of systems, document management and building handover;
- collating and reporting all defects to the relevant District Operations Department and co-ordinating access for rectification;
- educating and co-ordinating with other M+ and West Kowloon departments on the role of the specialist requirements for Gallery related Building Services, and developing the necessary relationships with these departments to create an effective working environment; and
- representing and advocating M+ at an international level as part of conference attendance and the relevant museum networks to create a strong assurance to other international institutions that the critical environmental conditions are met to support any potential working relationships including loans.
- possess a recognised university degree in engineering, preferably with the training in facility management or equivalent;
- have at least 15 years’ experience including 5 years at a senior level in a building services role or similar, preferably within a cultural or high visitor attendance environment;
- demonstrate knowledge, experience and confidence to engage and professionally interact with museum and design professionals, as well as other construction-related personnel and contractors to support specification formulation, procurement and ongoing audit procedures for the delivery of facilities management services;
- preferably attain professional membership of relevant institutions; such as CIBSE, IMECHE, HKIE, RICS, HKIS RPHM, CFM;
- showcase proven ability to interpret technical drawings, construction terms, scheduling and planning concepts; and
- have excellent oral and written communication skills preferably in English and Chinese.
