What's it like to be an Architect?
Architects plan, design and oversee the construction of buildings. They create architectural designs that balance the aesthetic appeal with functionality and safety considerations. Their work can encompass a wide range of projects, from designing individual homes to planning large-scale urban environments. They collaborate with clients, engineers, contractors and other specialists to create harmonious and sustainable spaces. Architects can work in architectural firms, construction, real estate development or in public sectors like local authorities.
Tasks and duties
- Creating detailed building designs and highly precise architectural drawings both by hand and using specialist computer-aided design applications.
- Collaborating with a team of professionals such as construction managers, quantity surveyors and engineering consultants.
- Coordinating the work of contractors to ensure project specifications are met.
- Ensuring that all work is carried out in line with local guidelines, regulations and building codes.
- Working closely with clients to ensure their design visions and requirements are met within the agreed parameters of cost and schedule.
- Writing and presenting reports, proposals, applications and contracts to clients and stakeholders.
- Making onsite visits to check on project status and conducting regular project report progress to stakeholders.
How to become an Architect
Architects should first apply to be a member of the Hong Kong Institute of Architects (or other related professional associations) and register with the Architects Registration Board of Hong Kong before practising.
- 1.Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or other related disciplines.
- 2.Familiarity with AutoCAD and other graphic presentation software.
- 3.Understanding of HKSAR building codes and standards.
- 4.Working experience in residential, retail and commercial projects.
- 5.Strong communication, project management and interpersonal skills.
