What's it like to be an Assistant Teacher?
An Assistant Teacher supports a Teacher in delivering education and managing classroom activities. A crucial part of an Assistant Teacher's job is developing instructional material, supervising students and assisting students who may need extra help. This could be in traditional classroom settings, special education or early childhood education. They can work in public and private schools, as well as child care centres.
Tasks and duties
- Assisting the lead teacher in preparing lesson plans and instructional materials.
- Implementing teaching strategies under the guidance of the lead teacher.
- Providing one-on-one or small group instruction as necessary or planned by the lead teacher.
- Observing student performance and reporting the observations to the lead teacher.
- Helping to maintain a safe and clean classroom environment.
- Assisting with non-instructional duties such as serving meals, managing classroom materials and supervising students.
How to become an Assistant Teacher
Assistant Teachers support the teacher in managing classroom activities, preparing lesson plans and supervising students. A degree in Education is required.
- Degree in Education or a related discipline.
- Should have relevant work experience in teaching or a similar discipline.
- Some institutions may require certification such as a postgraduate certificate in Education (PGCE) or equivalent.
- Fluency in written and spoken English & Chinese is a plus.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
