What's it like to be a Flight Attendant?
Flight Attendants are responsible for ensuring the safety and comfort of passengers during airline flights. Their primary duties include demonstrating safety procedures, serving meals and refreshments and attending to passenger needs during the flight. Flight Attendants work in the aviation industry, typically for commercial airlines. This role often involves irregular hours, and can sometimes be physically demanding. It also provides opportunities to experience different cultures and see different parts of the world.
Tasks and duties
- Overseeing the safety of passengers and demonstrating emergency procedures.
- Providing customer service including serving meals and drinks.
- Conducting pre-flight checks to ensure that security equipment is working properly and the plane is clean.
- Submitting reports on flight incidents.
- Reassuring passengers during unexpected flight conditions such as turbulence.
How to become a Flight Attendant
Most commercial airlines require a high school diploma for the flight attendant role, as well as fluency in Cantonese, Mandarin and English.
- 1.High school graduate or above; some airlines have specific grade requirements for HKCEE or HKDSE subjects.
- 2.Fluent in oral English, Mandarin and Cantonese; some airlines would also require the ability to read and write Chinese, with knowledge of other Asian languages a plus.
- 3.Previous experience in airline, hospitality or service industry would be a plus.
- 4.Has minimum arm-reach of 208cm on tiptoe and is physically fit.
- 5.Strong customer service, communication and interpersonal skills.
