What's it like to be an Occupational Therapist?
Occupational Therapists are health professionals who help individuals of all ages to engage in daily activities, particularly when physical or mental health problems prevent them from doing so naturally. They develop personalised treatment plans that may include exercises or adaptations to the person's environment, like using special equipment. Occupational Therapists may work in hospitals, schools or clients' homes. In addition to practical sessions, these professionals assess progress, adjust treatments as necessary and offer advice to family members or caregivers.
Tasks and duties
- Assessing the physical, psychological and social capabilities of clients.
- Evaluating clients' abilities to perform daily activities and implement appropriate treatment plans to help improve, recover or maintain these abilities.
- Developing treatment plan goals and objectives with the client, their family and/or supports.
- Implementing therapeutic exercises and instructing clients in the use of assistive techniques or equipment to improve function in areas such as: movement, self-care, leisure, home management or work-related tasks.
- Regularly reviewing and evaluating the effectiveness of intervention plans.
- Writing reports and maintain client records in order to track progress and meet regulatory requirements.
