What's it like to be a Radiographer?
Radiographers are healthcare professionals who specialise in the imaging of human anatomy for the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions. Working within a range of settings including hospitals, clinics and diagnostic imaging centres, their core responsibilities include operating imaging equipment such as X-rays, CT scans and MRI machines, following precise instructions to create diagnostic images, while ensuring patient safety at all times. They interact directly with patients, positioning them correctly for imaging and explaining procedures to them. In this profession, strong attention to detail and technical ability is vital, alongside excellent interpersonal communication skills. Knowledge of human anatomy, radiation safety and patient care is also essential in this career.
Tasks and duties
- Operating imaging equipment such as X-rays and CT scanners to capture images.
- Carefully positioning patients to get the correct angle for the required images.
- Protecting patients from unnecessary radiation exposure during the imaging process.
- Evaluating the quality of X-rays and other images to ensure they are of sufficient quality to aid in medical diagnosis.
- Maintaining detailed patient records and adjusting equipment settings for different procedures.
- Working closely with radiologists and other medical professionals to discuss imaging requirements and results.
- Ensuring regular maintenance and proper calibration of radiographic equipment to uphold safety standards.
How to become a Radiographer
- 1.Degree holder of Radiography or a related discipline.
- 2.Work experience in a relevant field is an advantage.
- 3.Registered with the Radiographers Board of Hong Kong and possesses a valid annual practising certificate.
- 4.Holder of a valid Irradiating Apparatus License issued by the Radiation Board of Hong Kong.
- 5.Detail-oriented with excellent communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills.
