What's it like to be a Solicitor?
Solicitors are legal professionals who provide expert advice to clients on various aspects of the law, prepare legal documents and represent clients in court proceedings. Their clients can range from individuals and small businesses to large corporations. Typically, Solicitors work in private practice, but they can also be found in the public sector, for courts or within a corporate setting. Their practice areas can vary widely, from family law, to corporate law, to property law, among others.
Tasks and duties
- Advising clients on legal matters, understanding their needs, and explaining complex legal issues to them clearly.
- Representing clients in courts, tribunals and other legal settings.
- Drafting agreements, contracts, wills, and other legal documents to meet client requirements.
- Negotiating on behalf of clients in dispute resolution matters.
- Continually studying and interpreting new laws and regulations to ensure accurate advice is provided.
- Collaborating with colleagues and working in teams for complex cases requiring various areas of specialisation.
How to become a Solicitor
Solicitors are legal professionals who advise clients on various aspects of the law, prepare legal documents and represent clients in court proceedings. A Bachelor’s Degree in Law and other related certifications are required.
- 1.An L.L.B. (Bachelor of Laws) or higher in legal-related discipline. Some organisations may prefer a postgraduate degree in law or a postgraduate certificate in law (PCLL).
- 2.Should have experience in practising law and offering legal advice. To qualify as a trainee solicitor, for example, an individual must undergo two years of training in a Hong Kong law firm as a trainee solicitor under a trainee solicitor contract.
- 3.Must hold a valid practising certificate issued by the Law Society of Hong Kong.
- 4.In-depth knowledge of related laws and keeps oneself updated with new developments in the legal space.
- 5.Detail-oriented, has strong communication skills and solid interpersonal skills.
