▪ How To Write An Effective Cover Letter When Applying for Jobs in 2021

Dear Ms Au,

I’m Patricia Henderson, a former In-flight Service Manager at SkyHigh Airlines. One of my ex-colleagues, Alistair Hughes, who works as a Native English Teacher at your ESF school, recently mentioned that you are looking for another Native English Teacher to join your English Department. I’m writing to apply for the position and strongly believe that my solid background in education and unwavering passion for the English language will allow me to excel in the role in your school.

Ever since graduating from the University of Sunderland with a double degree in Arts and Education, I’ve held multiple customer service positions in Australia and Hong Kong, which greatly honed my communication and interpersonal skills as well as my ability to work effectively under pressure. However, as I was helping out my sister’s children with their homework one fateful afternoon, I realized that my passion lies in education and that the invaluable skills—such as problem-solving and the ability to remain calm even in stressful situations—I picked up throughout my career have, unbeknownst to me, shaped me into a competent educator. (Editor’s note: Communicate your compelling reason for making a career switch + Support aforementioned reason with relevant experience and/or skill set)

To pursue my dreams, I enrolled in a full-time Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) at the University of Hong Kong and successfully completed the program in November last year. (Editor’s note: Highlight qualification(s) that will help you competently perform the responsibilities of the role.) I also sat the IELTS Academic Test(Editor’s note: Include relevant additional achievements to strengthen your application) and passed with a band score of 9, which is the highest score attainable. My exceptional understanding of the English language, from vocabulary and grammar to linguistics, coupled with my nurturing personality give me confidence that I will be more than capable of meeting the requirements of the role and exceeding expectations.

It would be an honor to be given the opportunity to teach at your school, which is one of the most reputed in the city. I’m particularly impressed with your emphasis on your students’ psychological well-being. Apart from having highly-qualified counselors, your mandatory mental health training for all teachers to help them identify student-related issues, such as anxiety, depression, and eating disorders, and effectively provide support to students in-need strikes a chord with me and I will be more than willing to play my part.

I would love to meet with you in person, discuss this position further, and share more about my work experience. Please feel free to reach out to me anytime if you have any questions or need further clarifications on my experience.

Thank you for your consideration!

Yours truly,

Patricia Henderson
