In a letter of recommendation for an employee, the concerned employee is praised for their strengths, abilities, competence, and work achievements. It communicates the industry specific experience, key skills, and specific accomplishments which enabled the individual to perform well in their previous roles at employer’s organization.
If an employee is looking for a change of industry, it is essential to emphasize the soft skills they possess which can be used across industries and sectors. Associate their work achievements with transferable skills such as strong communication, negotiation, adaptability, ability to work under pressure, decision making, leadership, ability to motivate others and the like. Give practical examples and include metrics, if possible, to add weight to your statements.
It is important to state your work relationship with the employee for whom you are writing the recommendation. Mention how long you have known the person for and the length of their employment with the organization.
Use a business letter format if you are sending a hard copy of the letter. Include the date, recipient’s name, job title, organization’s name and address, contact number, and official email id. Include a subject line before salutation. In case you do not know who the recipient is, write a standard letter stating “ To whom it may concern”.
