英語小教室 - “A number of workers”是複數還是單數？

There are still a number of workers on strike. (有很多工人仍在罷工)

雖然a number用上冠詞a，但還是要用複數的are而不是is，因為那是指很多工人。

A number of factors are to be considered. (有很多因素需要考慮)
同理，這句也要用are而不是is。

但是，The number of women CEOs has increased. (女性行政總裁人數上升了) 這句則要用單數。因這個the number of是指人數，是一個數字。

除了a number of，如果遇到 a large number of / a small number of，那都是用複數，而不會用單數。
