Job Description

The role

The Educational Assistant is responsible for the academic support and pastoral care of children with specific learning needs.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting children identified by the Learning Enhancement Teacher (LET) as requiring 1:1 support;
  • Supporting the development of learning, independence, communication and behaviour under the guidance of the classroom teacher and LET;
  • Supporting a pupil during lessons, transition to other classes and during less structured times such as play;
  • Supporting in the classroom or a separate space as need dictates;
  • Running additional support programmes as directed by the LET;
  • Liaising with class teacher, SENCO and other external professionals about individual education plans (IEPs), contributing to the planning and delivery as appropriate;
  • Producing extra resources for each child as directed by the class teacher or LET;
  • Assisting in delivering educational programmes, designed by the class teacher and LET;
  • Taking part in team meetings and reporting on student performance;
  • Being part of a classroom team, under the direction of the class teacher and experienced educational assistants;
  • Working within agreed timetables of school and pupil activities and to maintain all appropriate written records as necessary and as directed;
  • Consistently and effectively implementing agreed behaviour management strategies;
  • Managing and supporting pupils with challenging behaviour, this may include the appropriate use of physical intervention adhering to all relevant safeguarding policies and procedures;
  • Being aware of confidential issues linked to home/pupil/teacher/school;
  • Share information about pupils with other staff, parents / carers, internal and external agencies, as appropriate under the guidance of the Head of Learning Enhancement and in line with school policies and procedures.
Requirements

  • Degree or Diploma in Education an advantage;
  • Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) Therapy training is desirable but not essential;
  • Prior international school experience (Primary) is essential;
  • Experience working with children in a special education setting is required;
  • Previous work experience with children with ASD, speech, language and communication needs and sensory issues are desirable;
  • Excellent command of English;
  • Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills;
  • Willing to put our pupils’ needs at the centre of all they do at work;
  • Complying with legal and organisational requirements for maintaining the health, safety and security of yourself and others in the learning environment;
  • Taking part in training activities offered by the school to further knowledge and skills of working with a child with specific learning difficulties;
  • Willing to support playground/break time supervision e.g. educational games, homework clubs etc.
