Job Description

Harrow International School Hong Kong is the first international boarding and day school in Hong Kong. It is the third school in the Harrow family of schools in the Asia region and provides a British independent style of education from Early Years to Year 13 in custom-built facilities in a stunning location in Hong Kong. The School combines elements of educational philosophy, practice and traditions from Harrow School in London with the international mindedness of a diverse pupil body in Hong Kong. Having opened in September 2012, the School roll is currently over 1300 and the school achieves some of the best results in Hong Kong at A-level and GCSE and pupils go on to study at some of the top universities across the world. Harrow Hong Kong is, however, about much more than academic results and our pupils excel in music, drama, sport and art as well as involving themselves in service to the local community.

Job Title: Graphic Designer

Job Purpose: To provide dedicated graphic design resource for Harrow International School Hong Kong, to include defining requirements, visualising and creating graphics by adhering to the Harrow brand guidelines to create all forms of collateral for both online and offline purposes.

Start Date: 29 April 2019

Tenure: Full time, 2 years renewable contract

Reporting Line: Director of Communications, Admissions and Development

Directly responsible for the overall design and illustrative/graphic /visuals for use in school publications, advertising, internal and external events. Serves as principle coordinator for graphic publication production while managing to a prescribed budget. Works collaboratively with the department head and/or contributing authors to realise a final product.

Specific aims and key responsibilities of this position are:

  • Preparing work to be accomplished by gathering information and materials
  • Planning concept by studying information and materials
  • Illustrating concept by designing rough layout of art and copy regarding arrangement, size, type size and style, and related aesthetic concepts
  • Obtaining approval of concept by submitting rough layout for approval
  • Preparing finished copy and art by operating typesetting, printing, and similar equipment; purchasing from vendors
  • Preparing final layout by marking and pasting up finished copy and art
  • Ensuring operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment
  • Completing projects by coordinating with outside agencies, art services, printers, etc
  • Maintaining technical knowledge by attending design workshops; reviewing professional publications; participating in professional societies
  • Contributing to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed
  • Implementing safeguarding procedures at the School
  • Undertaking duties as the Head of School or her delegated representative may reasonably request.

The post holder will be expected to comply with any reasonable request by the line manager to undertake work of a similar level that is not specified in this job description. This job description may be amended at any time following discussion between the line manager and member of staff, and will be reviewed annually.

Person Specification

Qualifications:

  • Higher diploma holder in the relevant field

Skills:

  • Good command of both written and spoken English
  • Knowledge in Adobe Creative suite including Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign
  • Graphic Design Skills, Layout Skills, Desktop Publishing Tools, Acute Vision
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills

Experience:

  • Two or more years of graphic arts and publications experience with proven project management skills • Experience managing to a budget and the ability to work with a variety of projects and vendors is desirable

Knowledge:

  • Strong working knowledge of printing, publishing and/or graphics art procedures and related computer software
