Job Description

Prenetics is one of the largest diagnostics and genetic testing companies globally. With a team of more than 400 and with over US$60 million in strategic funding from Alibaba, Ping An Ventures, New World Development and more, the group has been pivotal in the fight against COVID-19. To date, Prenetics has performed more than 2 million PCR tests in Hong Kong and in the United Kingdom. Prenetics works closely with both governments and came to international fame when it helped resume the season with the English Premier League and set up COVID-19 testing operations in airports globally, including Hong Kong International Airport and Heathrow Airport.

Furthermore, the group recently made an acquisition of an Oxford University spin-out company, whom had developed a rapid COVID-19 test, with accurate results in 20 minutes. The group also operates two leading direct to consumer DNA platforms, CircleDNA and DNAFit.

About this role


We are looking for a highly qualified and experienced Vice-President (VP) of Bioinformatics to join us at Prenetics. The ideal candidate should have the ability to build and deploy advanced genomic technologies that create impact to the healthcare and wellness industry. This candidate should also have solid practical experience in building and maintaining bioinformatics workflows and be able to lead niche Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), Bioinformatics and Digital Health Projects.

As VP of Bioinformatics, you should have the urge to thrive on working within a startup environment with strong communication skills to execute on high-impact, high-leverage processes, and programs that will scale globally. The ability to influence and partner with cross-functional teams (e.g. lab team; clinical team; product and engineering team) will be key to success in this role.

As this is a key bioinformatics leadership position, your role is crucial to empower the team to transform novel health technologies to the solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of bioinformaticians for the development of new bioinformatics and digital health workflows
  • Implement, maintain and upgrade the automation of genomic data analysis and quality control workflow/pipeline on premise and cloud environment
  • Build scalable mutations, genomics annotation and phenotype databases
  • Work with internal and external IT teams to deploy and manage bioinformatics workflows
  • Work with scientists and software engineers to implement and driving the deployment of novel bioinformatics solutions

Qualifications and Experience Requirements

  • PhD in computer science, bioinformatics, information systems or related field
  • 10 years’ experience working in the industry is preferred (selected Master’s level candidates with proven track-record to lead will also be considered)
  • Strong prior experience with building and managing Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) workflows
  • Experience with developing bioinformatics solution on cloud (e.g. AWS EC2 and S3 environment)
  • Parallel/High-performance computing experience
  • Experience working with Docker
  • Experience with software development and project tracking cycle (Agile, Scrum or Kanban)
  • Knowledge and experience in the usage of databases such as RDBS or equivalent
  • Experienced with Linux computing environment
  • Advanced programming skill with Python or R
  • Experience with code version control (e.g Git, Bitbucket or SVN)
  • Good command of spoken and written English
  • Good interpersonal, presentation and communication skills, and teamwork
  • We are open to candidates who are open to work in our Hong Kong office or Chennai office.
