What's it like to be a Civil Engineer?
A Civil Engineer designs, builds and supervises infrastructure projects such as roads, buildings, airports, tunnels, dams, bridges and systems for water supply and sewage treatment. The role typically involves complex problem-solving, analysing reports, maps, drawings and blueprints, as well as strategic planning. Civil Engineers often collaborate with architects and work across a range of industries, often within the public and private sectors. This career often demands overseeing construction sites and ensuring all regulations and safety measures are met. As a Civil Engineer, individuals work in an office environment, but are also required to be on site for project oversight and problem solving.
Tasks and duties
- Designing and implementing engineering projects.
- Evaluating and analysing data to create design plans and specifications for projects.
- Carrying out site investigations to ensure the feasibility of construction projects.
- Utilising software to produce detailed blueprints and designs.
- Working closely with architects, construction personnel and city planners to ensure coordination of all project elements.
- Monitoring and inspecting work done by various parties to ensure conformance to design specifications and safety regulations.
- Developing cost estimates for materials, equipment and labour to determine a project’s feasibility.
How to become a Civil Engineer

The role typically involves complex problem-solving, analysing reports, maps, drawings, and blueprints, and strategic planning.
- 1.Bachelor's Degree or above in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
- 2.Working experience in a related field; some companies may look for experience in large-scale civil projects (e.g., bridges & highways, and the like).
- 3.Membership or certification with HKIE (Hong Kong Institution of Engineers) / MICE (Institution of Civil Engineers) / RPE (Registered Professional Engineer) / CEng (Chartered Engineer) will be an advantage.
- 4.Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and project management software tools is a plus.
- 5.Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as communication and interpersonal skills.
