What's it like to be a Facilities Manager?
A Facilities Manager is responsible for making sure that buildings and their services meet the needs of the people that work in them. They can manage services such as cleaning, security, maintenance and parking. A Facilities Manager typically needs to have organisational and management skills, often requiring a mixture of technical and soft skills depending on the industry they're in. They coordinate building maintenance and operations, create plans for replacing or fixing equipment or infrastructure, and can often be in charge of negotiating contracts with outside vendors for different services.
Tasks and duties
- Overseeing and managing facility maintenance, repairs and improvements.
- Coordinating space allocation and layout, communications infrastructure and building projects.
- Ensuring compliance with all relevant health and safety standards and regulations.
- Negotiating and managing contracts with external service providers such as cleaning, security and maintenance staff.
- Inspecting buildings regularly to identify areas in need of repair or renovation.
- Developing and managing the budget for facility operations and maintenance.
- Planning for future development of the facility in line with strategic company objectives.
