What's it like to be a Registered Nurse?
Registered Nurses are healthcare professionals who provide and coordinate patient care in a variety of settings, including hospitals, care homes, and clinics. They often work closely with doctors and other healthcare staff, assessing the health needs of patients, administering treatment and medication, and monitoring patient progress. Registered Nurses also provide education to patients and their families about their medical condition and how to manage it.
Tasks and duties
- Providing patient care and support, including observing and monitoring patient health conditions.
- Administering medications, treatments and interventions as prescribed by healthcare providers.
- Educating patients and their families about managing illnesses or injuries.
- Coordinating with doctors and other healthcare professionals to create and evaluate customised care plans.
- Documenting all activities, treatments, medications and patient responses in the patient’s chart.
- Ensuring cleanliness and hygiene in the workplace to reduce the spread of diseases.
How to become a Registered Nurse
A registered nurse should hold a valid practising certificate issued by the Nursing Council of Hong Kong before they can practise. To acquire a certificate, one must send a written application to the Secretariat and pay a fee of HKD 230. It is valid for a period not exceeding three years on 31 December.
- 1.Bachelor's Degree or higher diploma in Nursing or equivalent.
- 2.Working experience in related services as a registered nurse is a plus.
- 3.Certificates/training in related services are an advantage (e.g., Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, Paediatrics Advanced Life Support, primary health care training, and the like).
- 4.Some institutions may prefer a strong customer service background.
- 5.Strong communication skills, interpersonal skills, and patient-oriented care methods.
