What's it like to be a Merchandiser?
A Merchandiser is tasked with ensuring that products appear in the right store, at the right time and in the correct quantities. This involves working closely with a buying team to accurately forecast trends, plan stock levels and monitor performance. The role may also include creative tasks such as designing and implementing product displays to captivate consumers and maximise sales. Often employed by retail businesses, Merchandisers work closely with store staff to make sure stock satisfies customer demand.
Tasks and duties
- Analysing sales figures, customer feedback and market trends to anticipate product needs.
- Collaborating with buyers, suppliers, distributors and analysts to negotiate prices, quantities and timelines.
- Increasing customer interest and sales by displaying trending products.
- Forecasting profits and sales, and optimising the sales volume and profitability of designated product areas.
- Planning and developing merchandising strategies.
- Analysing the effectiveness of displays and removing slow-selling items.
- Maintaining relationships with existing suppliers while seeking new ones.
How to become a Merchandiser
Merchandisers are responsible for how, when, and how many products appear inside a store. Their tasks include forecasting product trends and designing product displays to maximise sales. A degree in business will be an advantage when working in merchandising.
- A degree in business (some companies might prefer having a minor in Marketing or Merchandising) or a related discipline.
- Relevant work experience in sourcing, sales, marketing or merchandising is a plus.
- Knowledge of the respective sector in retail (e.g., luxury goods, toys, cookware, fashion, etc), particularly its sales and marketing cycle.
- Strong communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
