Veterinary Nurses provide valuable healthcare to animals and are an essential part of any veterinary team. They carry out technical work and are skilled in undertaking a range of diagnostic tests, medical treatments and minor surgical procedures, under veterinary direction. Veterinary Nurses also advise on maintaining animal health, providing owners with information on nutrition, disease prevention and animal behaviour. They commonly work in veterinary practices, animal hospitals or clinics and animal research institutions.
Tasks and duties
- Assisting veterinarians in the examination and treatment of animals.
- Administering medication, vaccines and treatments prescribed by the veterinarian.
- Monitoring and caring for animals after surgery, including wound care and the administration of post-operative medication.
- Performing initial health checks and providing routine care for in-patients.
- Maintaining veterinary instruments, equipment and the cleanliness of the practice.
- Preparing animals and operating room for surgery.
- Communicating with pet owners, offering advice and support on pet health and care.
