What's it like to be a Lecturer?
A Lecturer is a professional educator who delivers lectures and conducts tutorials or seminars in a specific subject area at a university or higher education institution. Their job involves research within their area of expertise, curriculum development, assessment of students’ work and supervision of research projects. Lecturers work in a range of educational environments from universities and colleges to professional institutions. Many Lecturers also work alongside professionals in their field to stay updated on industry trends and developments.
Tasks and duties
- Delivering lectures, seminars and tutorials.
- Preparing and setting tests, examination papers and exercises.
- Assessing students' coursework and providing them with feedback on their performance.
- Contributing to the development and planning of courses and curriculum.
- Undertaking research and publishing findings in scholarly journals.
- Supervising students' research activities.
- Keeping up-to-date with advancements in the field and participating in professional conferences or seminars.
How to become a Lecturer
A Lecturer is an expert in one or more academic fields and specialises in teaching about that field. Universities and other tertiary education providers hire lecturers to teach or tutor students in their subjects of expertise. As lecturers are subject-matter experts, the job requires extensive industry experience.
- 1.Registered under the Education Ordinance as either a registered teacher or a permitted teacher
- 2.The government requires that all new teachers should be professionally trained or degree holders. At least a Bachelor’s degree in a related field is required to become a lecturer; some roles might require a postgraduate or doctorate.
- 3.Experience working in their field of expertise as well as in teaching is a plus.
- 4.Some roles may require certifications, such as the TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) for English lecturers or a PGDE (Postgraduate Diploma in Education).
- 5.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
