What's it like to be an Optometrist?
Optometrists are healthcare professionals who specialise in diagnosing and treating visual conditions, prescribing corrective eyewear and conducting eye examinations. They're trained to recognise eye conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and cataracts as well as systemic diseases that affect the eye like diabetes or hypertension. Patient education about eye health is a key aspect of their work. Optometrists often practise in standalone optometry practices or they may work in larger healthcare settings like hospitals or retail optometry chains. This profession generally requires a degree in optometry along with the necessary clinical training.
Tasks and duties
- Performing eye tests and examinations to assess patient's vision and diagnose issues.
- Prescribing corrective eyewear, such as glasses or contact lenses.
- Detecting eye diseases or abnormalities like glaucoma, cataracts or colour blindness through direct examination and use of specialised medical instruments.
- Educating patients about proper eye care, including hygiene and habits that promote eye health.
- Referring patients to other medical specialists when issues beyond the scope of optometry are detected.
- Keeping detailed patient records and maintaining up-to-date industry knowledge.
