What's it like to be a Librarian?
A Librarian is trained in organising, managing and distributing library resources. This career involves helping individuals and groups find information, whether it's books, periodicals, audiovisual materials or digital resources. Librarians may also conduct classes, coordinate community events and oversee library collections. They can work in a variety of settings, including public libraries, schools, colleges and universities and governmental agencies.
Tasks and duties
- Selecting and sourcing suitable resources, including books, videos and software.
- Organising resources in a way that makes them easy for users to find.
- Helping library users find the materials they need.
- Managing the circulation of library resources by maintaining borrower records, issuing and receiving borrowed items.
- Providing educational services, such as storytelling or arranging talks on various topics for different age groups.
- Administering the library budget and negotiating contracts with vendors and suppliers.
- Keeping abreast with advancements in digital library technologies and databases for efficient service.
How to become a Librarian
Librarians are trained to find information, whether they're books, periodicals, audiovisual materials or digital resources. A degree in Library Science or a related discipline is required.
- 1.A degree in Library and Information Science or a related discipline; some organisations may require a Masters degree in Library Science (MLS) or a chartership from the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (MCLIP).
- 2.Relevant work experience as a librarian is often preferred.
- 3.Some organisations may require familiarity with library management software such as Follett Destiny, Oliver Library, Atriuum ILS, etc.
- 4.Strong communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills.
